Summary:

  • Homes 20-30 years old can really start to show their age.
  • A renewed look is easy with replacement siding.
  • New siding can reduce fire danger.
  • Newer siding choices increase impact resistance and increase insulation.
  • Replacing siding earns a respectable ROI.

Yancey Company has been a respected home remodeler for over 8 decades! When it comes to siding, we generally recommend fiber cement siding from the James Hardie company. We do offer some additional choices should Hardiplank siding not fit well with your home’s overall aesthetic.

Our #1 Choice for Siding and Why:

  • Hardie is made from silica and cement. Very durable.
  • Without much wood pulp fuel, termites turn up their nose to it.
  • Fire resistance. Hardie does not burn.
  • Comes pre-primed from the factory. Holds paint for ages!
  • Also available pre-painted from the factory.
  • Available in a variety of textures, widths, and styles.

Not Just Horizontal Lap Siding!

Yes, horizontal lap siding is the most popular siding style. We sell and install a lot of it. But, there are other varieties of Hardie. Check out their complete product line here.

Hardie is available in a multitude of trim widths and textures and well as specialty products for vented soffits, fascia boards, and panels. The Artisan line is appropriate for modern contemporary homes.

Hardie panels, made from the same pest and rot resistant fiber cement, are available in vertical siding styles, stucco textured, and fish scale for Victorian style homes.

Our #2 Choice: Engineered Wood

Engineered wood, like Louisiana Pacific SmartSide, is comparable to Hardie in longevity and impact resistance. Made from wood fibers and resins, it’s pest and rot resistant. Like Hardie, it’s available preprinted in a variety of textures and 16 pre-painted colors to  selection from.

Stucco Is Our #3 Choice

Stucco takes longer to install because you have to mix it, trowel it on, and texture it. Then the right type of sealant and primer must be correctly applied before the paint. It takes more skill than hanging horizontal lap siding but, stucco is a good insulator and cracks from settling foundations are fairly easy to repair.

Next up: Vinyl Siding

There are some great siding options available from Alside Vinyl Siding. Available with insulation for increased comfort. Vinyl has a good reputation for good looking aesthetics but, vinyl siding is not as impact resistant as Hardie. Vinyl siding can become brittle with age and can chip and crack from hail stones. Since vinyl siding is very flexible, it’s imperative to have a super flat wall system or the imperfections will be quite obvious.

For Repairs and Small Jobs: Wood and T1-11 siding.

Wood offers no protection against wild fires. However, homes with wood siding that is still in reasonable shape can have rot or termite damaged pieces removed and replaced for a quick fix.

T1-11 is also great for repairs or small jobs. Since it is OSB or plywood based, it’s still not water, dry-rot, fire, or insect resistant.

How About Potential Savings?

There are several ways you can save when you replace your siding. First off, there are energy efficiency upgrade credits available when you file your taxes. When you do the siding, there are opportunities to replace or add to your wall insulation as well making you edible for the Federal Tax Credit for energy efficiency.

If you’re a veteran or senior, Yancey offers discounts.  If you are a first responder or military you can apply with the manufacturer for product rebates.  Here’s James Hardie’s program details.
